Shelbourne 1 College Corinthians 0: Dean Kelly maintained his scoring run in the FAI Ford Cup against non-league sides from Cork as Shelbourne booked a place in the quarter-finals against College Corinthians at Tolka Park.
Corinthians almost stole the lead inside 90 seconds.
A quick free-kick caught out the Shelbourne rearguard as Peter Moreland sneaked in behind Pat Flynn, but the winger’s heavy touch allowed goal keeper Niall Burdon gather.
It proved to be a false dawn as the visitors were behind on five minutes for what would prove the only goal of a scrappy tie. Lee Murtagh won a corner off Josh Kra and negligent marking from Sean Brennan’s delivery was duly punished as Kelly headed to the net.
Murtagh and Kelly were narrowly off target with shots from distance but Corinthians went close again on 39 minutes. Luke Connelly touched Richard Cronin’s ball down the line into the path of Moreland who lobbed wide. Shels bossed most of the second half, Brennan went close twice and sub Darren Tinnelly headed against the crossbar before Welsh spurned a late chance for the Cork visitors.
