Ireland’s Robbie Brady signs with Championship table toppers Bournemouth

Dubliner has been without a club since Burnley deal expired at the end of last season

Republic of Ireland international Robbie Brady has signed for AFC Bournemouth on a free transfer.

The Championship side announced on Monday that Brady has penned a deal until the end of the current campaign, though there will be an option for the club to extend his stay.

The 29-year-old Brady has been without a club since his contract with Burnley expired last May. Injuries have been a constant problem for the Dublin man as an Achilles tendon problem has ruled him out of all competitive action since appearing for Ireland in March against Qatar - his last international cap.

Speaking at the announcement of Brady’s signing, Bournemouth chief executive Neill Blake commented on Brady’s experience. “To be able to sign a player of Robbie’s experience and calibre on a free transfer is a coup for the football club,” he said.

“Robbie has huge quality and versatility to add another important option to Scott Parker and his coaching staff.

“Proven at the top level, Robbie knows what it takes to be a Premier League player and we’re delighted he has chosen to join us at Vitality Stadium.”

The Cherries currently have a three-point lead at the top of the Championship table.

In an interview with afcbTV, Brady spoke of the challenge ahead of the club as they seek promotion back up to the Premier League, something he experienced with Hull in 2013.

“It’s going to take a lot of hard work,” he admits. “Everyone knows that in this division you’ve got to get the basics right first and that’s hard work.

“(It’s a case of) getting that tight-knit group together, becoming a force and becoming hard to beat really. I’m looking forward to playing my part in that.

“(The club) has had a fantastic start, and long may it continue.”
