World Cup quarter-final as it happened - England 1 France 2 (FT)

We’ll leave it there for the blog. Another few days off from the World Cup before the semi-finals get underway on Tuesday.

But who was France’s main man? This would say it was Antoine Griezmann tonight. Those two assists were massive at the end of the day.

France go through but did they deserve to? England had more possession and looked more incisive but at the end of the day France just had more quality in the final third when it mattered. England kept Mbappé quiet, they had plenty of joy down the flanks themselves but couldn’t work Lloris enough.

Missing a penalty doesn’t help but they struggled to contain Olivier Giroud down the other end when it mattered. The big man deserves a lot of credit, he outmuscled Maguire and Stones in his battle with them and got the decisive goal.

90+11 mins: HE’S SENT IT INCHES OVER THE BAR! That’s it, ENGLAND ARE OUT OF THE WORLD CUP

Rashford’s free-kick is a brilliant strike but he just doesn’t get enough dip on it as it settles right on the roof of the net. That’s the last kick, Harry Kane’s penalty miss proves decisive as England are going home.

90+9 mins: England will have a free-kick right on the edge of the box. Coman is the guilty party, hauling Maguire down when he didn’t really look to be causing any problems. Rashford has already scored a World Cup at this tournament, can he do it again to keep England in the tournament?

More injury time will be added here. Stones lands awkwardly on his foot and needs lengthy treatment. Meanwhile it looks like Grealish is going to come on and it is for Stones.

90+5 mins: England have everyone up and are relying on long balls now. Lloris this time comes to claim a Shaw cross safely.

90+3 mins: Maguire is insisting he was held in the box after a cross from Rashford. Rabiot is grabbing his arm but given what this ref has let go, he’s not going to give that.

90+2 mins: Shaw puts in a tempting cross with Rashford lurking. Lloris comes but is unconvincing and just about gets a hand to it to knock it behind for a corner.

Eight additional minutes. Eight minutes left for England to save their tournament.

90 mins: Maguire sees yellow for grabbing Griezmann around the neck. The first yellow for an England player at this tournament. From the free-kick, Giroud knocks it down into the box for Mbappé but he can’t get his shot away.

A tale of two strikers. At one end, Giroud comes up with the goods. Down the other, Kane has a nightmare with his penalty.

Southgate makes another change. Foden goes, in comes Rashford. I still can’t believe Kane missed that penalty by that much.

84 mins: HE’S MISSED IT! Would you believe it? England’s best penalty taker by far has blazed it over the bar, and it’s not even close. Is that all she wrote for England?

Harry Kane vs Hugo Lloris once again from the spot...

PENALTY ENGLAND! That was a stonewall penalty. I can’t believe it wasn’t given in the first place but the right decision ultimately comes. Hernandez sees yellow for his shove on Mount.

80 minutes: Huge penalty appeals as Mount goes down in the box. Every England player is shouting at the referee, pleading for VAR to get involved. It looks stone dead, Hernandez just shoved him in the back with no eye on the ball. Surely VAR will have a look.

Changes for England. Mount and Stirling are on, Saka and Henderson the ones to make way.

GOAL OLIVIER GIROUD

78 mins: France retake the lead! Griezmann sticks the ball in and it’s a beauty. Giroud is in a battle with Maguire but gets there first, sending a powerful header past Pickford. Just lump it up to the big man!

77 mins: WHAT A SAVE! Pickford rescues England. Mbappé skips past Saka before feeding Rabiot. His cross finds Giroud via Dembele and to be honest, Giroud should have done better. It ends up being at a nice height for Pickford but if it was in the corner it’s a different story.

75 mins: Giroud sends a header well wide. Hernandez puts hte ball in and Giroud rises above Shaw. Still, the United full-back does enough to put him off.

74 mins: Bellingham goes down in the box and is absolutely furious not to get the decision. Upamecano was vying with him for the ball but there didn’t look to be much in it.

72 mins: CHANCE! Saka nearly gets on the end of the cross. Shaw puts in a brilliant ball across the six-yard box. Saka is there but Hernandez just about beats him to it. In fact, it’s a free-kick against Saka for pushing his marker. Right call.

69 mins: Finally Saka gets a decision. Well, apart from the penalty. But outside the box he’s struggled to get any protection from the ref but this time he gets a free when Hernandez hauls him down. CHANCE! From the free-kick Maguire gets his head on it but he sends it inches wide. Lloris looked beaten. Turns out it’s hit the post and gone out.

66 mins: England aren’t happy. Saka clearly gets fouled but no whistle, then France get a free-kick on the counter for a far less egregious offence. Up the pitch, Giroud stretches to get on the end of a long ball but can’t get a touch.

Here is that Kane penalty.

62 mins: Saka keeps threatening after winning the penalty earlier. This time he runs into the box and forces Lloris into a save. This game is opening up nicely now.

58 mins: Back-to-back chances for France in response to the goal. First of all Rabiot forces Pickford into a save after the ball deflected to him, then Dembele makes a mess of a cross after Mbappé burned Walker out wide.

Penalty England! Saka is fouled by Tchouameni. Can Harry Kane equalise...

Mind games as Kane walks up to the ball to reposition it. Eventually, Kane hits it... and HE SCORES! Lloris goes the wrong way and England are level.

49 mins: The second half sparks into life a bit when Mbappé is fouled down the left. Griezmann takes the free and it’s cleared by Kane.

Half-time: England 0 France 1

France lead thanks to Tchoaumeni’s wonder strike. England had a purple patch in response but apart from then, they have lacked any real threat. A big job ahead for Southgate.

45+4 mins: Another England foray forward ends in nothing as Foden’s cross looks to pick out Maguire. He backs up looking to get his head on it but ends up falling over the defender.

Four minutes of added time.

45 mins: It’s quietened down since that flurry of chances about 10 minutes ago for England. Bellingham goes on a nice run down the left but his cross is cleared.

42 mins: Now Mbappé goes down but doesn’t get the decision. Stones with the challenge and the referee tells him to get up with disdain.

39 mins: CHANCE! France try to copy the Dutch with a nifty free-kick move. Rabiot sends the ball across the box and Mbappé pulls the trigger but launches it over the bar.

34 mins: Saka goes down in a heap on the edge of the box. Hernandez with the strong challenge but the referee says he got the ball.

And then here was that Kane penalty claim. VAR had a look, I reckon they said it was a foul but because it was outside the box VAR wasn’t able to intervene.

Here is that Tchouameni strike.

30 mins: SAVE! Kane pulls the trigger from deep and a swerving effort stings Lloris’ palms. From the corner, Stones nearly gets on the ball six yards out but just can’t get it through the mass of bodies.

25 mins: DOWN GOES KANE! Upamecano definitely makes contact with Kane close to the box and he goes down. Nothing given but VAR is having a look... No penalty! It looked to be outside the box but there is still no foul given. Play away.

22 mins: SAVE! England have responded well to going behind. Kane this time gets in behind and forces Lloris to smother his one-on-one effort.

21 mins: CHANCE! Shaw takes a free-kick from the edge of the box. He bends it nicely but it’s straight at Lloris.

17 mins: GOUL TCHOUAMENI!

What a goal! There’s nothing on but Tchouameni has had a moment of magic. He lets fly from 25 yards out and it’s a perfect strike, into the bottom corner past Pickford. England want a foul in the build-up but they won’t get it. Mbappé, Dembele and Griezmann all combine nicely in the lead up. What a goal.

15 mins: Saka gets dispossessed in his own half and it lets Rabiot drive at the box. He goes to Mbappé who crosses for Dembele but Stones gets across to deal with the threat.

11 mins: First shot on target. France work a cross for Giroud who gets his header on goal, but it was straight at Pickford.

10 mins: France’s close passing to each other is excellent. Bellingham needs to slide in on Griezmann to concede a corner and prevent a chance.

8 mins: Wasteful from Maguire. He tries a long ball behind Hernandez to free Saka but he launches it out of play.

7 mins: Now Giroud gets in on the act as he links with Mbappé. He continues his run into the box to meet the cross but tries to go with the scorpion kick. It gets a big ‘ooh’ from the crowd but he didn’t get anywhere near making contact.

6 mins: England get their first set-piece as Foden looks to whip a free-kick in towards Maguire. Upamecano gets to the ball first but Maguire was offside anyway.

4 mins: Now England break as Saka picks Tchouameni’s pocket. He finds Kane who looks to cross but sees his effort blocked. Foden gets it back and sets up a half-volley but once again a French body gets in the way.

2 mins: Saka pressures Upamecano high up the pitch but a clever touch sets up Hernandez for a counter. He lays it off to Mbappé, he gets to run at Walker for the first time. The Manchester City man is skipped past easily but Saka and Henderson back him up and come back to swarm Mbappé.

1 min: They’re underway in Qatar! France in their customary dark, navy blue start things off through Griezmann. They immediately go long to Mbappé but Walker reads it and wins that first battle to intercept.

Moments away from kick-off here. Walker vs Mbappé, Kane vs Varane, Bellingham vs Tchouameni, there are so many fascinating subplots to this. Who will end up on top?

In case you missed it earlier, Morocco are still at it. They became the first African side to qualify for a World Cup semi-final by beating Portugal earlier.

Harry Kane vs Raphael Varane could be a very intriguing battle, especially given their Premier League familiarity. Ken Early - who is at this game tonight for us - has written about Kane’s late career resurgence, turning from a pure finisher into more of a link-up number nine.

France are also unchanged from the side that lined out in the last-16 against Poland. It’s hard to look past that front three of Mbappé, Giroud and Dembele. Whatever about France’s defensive frailties - they haven’t kept a clean sheet yet at this tournament - that front three could win them the game if they fire.

Much has been made of how England might add an extra defender to deal with the threat of Kylian Mbappé. They haven’t. Gareth Southgate has kept faith with the XI that worked past Senegal, no doubt Jordan Henderson will drop deeper though to help out Kyle Walker when defending the French talisman.

Here we are then, the last of the quarter-finals and it promises to be a belter. France against England, a clash that could so easily be the final if the draw was different but one of these pre-tournament favourites will be on the way home later tonight.
