Doctors at the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore hospital have informed Olympic silver medal winner John Joe Nevin that both his legs were broken in an attack in Mullingar on Saturday last.

Nevin’s right leg was fractured in two places during the assault and a scan on his left leg undertaken today showed a fracture that will see the 24-year-old spend time in a wheelchair as he recuperates from his injuries.

Nevin sustained the injuries when attacked with a golf club and a stick as he attempted to act as a peacemaker in a row at his home at Ardleigh Crescent in Mullingar.

A 21-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident on Saturday afternoon. He was released without charge late on Saturday night and a file will be prepared for the DPP, gardaí confirmed.
