Dan Martin suffers final corner fall in Liege-Bastogne-Liege

Defending champion misses out as Australian Simon Gerrans triumphs

Ireland's Dan Martin suffered a heartbreaking end to his defence of the Liege-Bastogne-Liege Classic in Belgium on Sunday as a fall on the final corner ended his hopes of holding on to his title.

The 27-year-old Garmin Sharp rider was in second place and closing before his fall as Australia's Simon Gerrans took the 100th edition of 263-km race in a sprint finish.

Spain's Alejandro Valverde finished second and Poland's Michal Kwiatkowski was third.
