Healy takes award for top performances

LEAGUE OF IRELAND:CORK CITY midfielder Colin Healy has been named the Soccer Writers Association of Ireland Player of the Month for May after a string of impressive performances by the 29-year-old helped Paul Doolin's side to keep the pressure on Bohemians at the top of the table.

Healy featured in all five of the club’s league games last month and scored his second goal of the season in the win over Bray Wanderers. His from throughout the period underlined his status as key figure for his hometown club.

“It’s pleasing for me, but I wouldn’t have got it without the team,” said Healy of the award. “The lads have all been playing well, I was the one to get it, but anyone could have got it.”

The player is set to be in action for City again this evening as they head to the north-west for their FAI Cup third round replay against Sligo Rovers.

“To be fair, Sligo played really well against us so we can’t complain really about having to play a replay,” he said. “They were the better team in the second half (on Friday night) and it’s going to be tough up there because they are strong at home.”

City, meanwhile, have been given another month to sort out their problems with the Revenue Commissioners.

The High Court action to have the club wound up for non payment of tax was again adjourned yesterday and club officials said afterwards that they hoped to meet with the Revenue before the end of the week with a view to resolving the situation.

Doolin has Stephen O’Donnell back for this evening’s game in Sligo, but Robert Mezeckis, Davin O’Neill and Joe Gamble are all still unavailable.

Ahead of the night’s other games, Shamrock Rovers boss Michael O’Neill has some problems with Pat Flynn suspended and both Aidan Price and Darragh Maguire out injured.

Padraig Amond, who, like Price hurt himself in the warm up for Saturday’s original game against Drogheda, is a doubt for the replay at United Park.

And Monaghan United boss Mick Cooke has a full squad to choose from as he prepares his side for a second crack at Cherry Orchard in the wake of Sunday’s drawn game.
