After a county board meeting that went well into Tuesday night, Galway eventually appointed Noel Lane as their new senior hurling manager. An All-Ireland medal winner with the county in 1980, 1987 and 1988, Lane takes over from Mattie Murphy.

Joining Lane as the new county selectors will be another former Galway player John Connelly, as well as former Clare trainer Michael McNamara.

Lane's previous experience in such a position came as Galway's minor and under-21 manager, and he has also previously worked with McNamara as manager of international shinty teams.

Murphy failed to be reappointed on a vote of 33-21. The only other candidate, former Clare player Sean Stack, was ruled out of contention after the first round of voting among the county's hurling club delegates. Former Offaly manager Michael Bond was also one of the original candidates, but he subsequently withdrew.

The senior shinty international between Ireland and Scotland will be the curtain-raiser at 1.0 p.m. to the second International Rules game at Croke Park on Sunday (3.0 p.m.).

The Irish team will be captained by Kilkenny's DJ Carey and it also includes his team-mates Canice Brennan and Charlie Carter. Tipperary's Brendan Cummins will play in goal with representatives from Cork, Waterford, Galway, Limerick, Clare, Antrim and Wexford also in the starting line-up.

Meanwhile, Doon, beaten by Patrickswell by one point in last Sunday's Limerick SH final, have demanded a replay.

They have claimed that Barry Foley's 28th-minute point was not valid in that the ball actually went wide and they say they have video evidence to prove it.

Kerry, fielding 10 of their starting 15, were beaten by a fresher Cork side in the annual GOAL challenge played at Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney last evening.

Cork made a whirlwind start, scoring 2-1 in the first three minutes with goals from their minor star Conor Brosnan and Micheal O Croinin and Kerry simply never recovered.

Despite a Mike Frank Russell goal, Cork finished the stronger and a late Nicholas Murphy goal sealed victory - 3-9 to 2-6.
