DIT 1-12 Wexford 0-14
Paul Brogan struck for the crucial goal eight minutes into additional time as DIT snatched a last-gasp victory over an experimental Wexford side in the O’Byrne Cup clash at Páirc Uí Siochain, Gorey.
The eight minutes of additional time was brought about by a severe elbow injury sustained by Kieran Butler in the 51st minute that saw the game held up for some five minutes. But an understrength Wexford side, who trailed by 0-12 to 0-8 with 11 minutes of normal time remaining, staged a remarkable recovery kicking six unanswered points, with three from Ben Brosnan, to lead by two points seven minutes into additional time.
However a lapse in the home defence allowed DIT to build an attack down the right with Conor Grimes playing a high ball across the face of the goal. Brogan managed to rise highest to fist the ball to the net for what turned out the matchwinning score.
Centre-forward Conor Madden’s display lifted DIT through the opening 35 minutes as he kicked some fine points, while it was the accuracy of midfielder Paddy Byrne for the home side that kept Wexford in touch. After a close-fought opening half , DIT led 0-7 to 0-5 at the interval.
With Madden and Brogan continuing to point the way on the resumption the Dublin college moved into a 0-12 to 0-8 lead with 11 minutes remaining before the dramatic finale developed.
