Kerry beat Derry to make semi-final: All-Ireland quarter-final as it happened

74 mins: Derry’s goalkeeper Lynch scores a fine point from play and it’s all on the kickout, but Derry lose it and after some sharp interplay, Kerry substitute Dylan Geaney easily sticks it over. One more point for Kerry on the counter as White fists it over as icing on the cake.

Poor game but Kerry did enough and raised the intensity in the second half and Derry couldn’t handle it. A timid way to go out for Mickey Harte’s team in a pedestrian affair.

59 mins: Killian Spillane comes off the bench and immediately picks the ball up turns and scores. Some quality that sparked the game into action. Derry then go up the pitch Rogers scores a well-taken point. Two points in a minute as the game awakes from its slumber.

57 mins: Derry attack breaks down and out of nothing Kerry have numbers over and Sean O’Shea puts the ball over to put Kerry back ahead.

51 mins: Odhran Lynch gets furthest forward he has all game but plays a fist pass to nobody. Then Kerry walk up the pitch despite the goalkeeper being out, which sums up the intensity of this game. Then finally a bit of bite between McKaigue and Clifford over a one-on-one duel that gets the crowd going and then Cassidy counters and scores to put the scores level once more.

48 mins: Some poor shooting by Kerry this half, Geaney had plenty of space but kicks straight into the keeper’s hands. A good run at the defence, taking on a gamble and Ó Beaglaoich wins a free which Clifford converts and Kerry lead again.

43 mins: Bit of quality there finally for Kerry as Diarmuid O’Connor drops the shoulder and finds space and slots it over. Back to level scores. Kerry with a better build-up to another attack but O’Shea pulls his shot to the left and wide.

41 mins: Shane McGuigan breaks through and then a cynical foul by Foley, but no black card. McGuigan scores and we have our first point of the half after six minutes. Derry lead.

39 mins: Kerry’s first attempt of the second half, O’Connor hits into the keeper’s hands. They have the ball for another while but Derry turn the ball over as Geaney is surrounded.

Bad game, shocking lack of intensity before there’s a bit of pushing and shoving heading back into the dressingroom. Hopefully that might lead to a more passionate second half. Only 12 points in the half, six of them came in the first 13 minutes, McGuigan and Clifford starring. The next 24 minutes were small moments of quality interspersed with errors and nothing happening. Badly indicative of Kerry that David Clifford couldn’t get the ball. All to play for in the second half at least, where as Ger Canning said on commentary, hopefully a game will break out.

33 mins: David Clifford finally gets the ball after being out of the game for about 20 minutes, but misses on his left from a distance. Derry punish by going up the pitch, with McGuigan scoring well on his left under pressure.

32 mins: Not a great game here to say the least, bit disappointing and lacking the pace of the previous match. Cagey would be the word. Moments of intensity followed by minutes of slow possession at a time. Muted atmosphere too and plenty of errors.

29 mins: Veteran Paul Geaney scores a point to put Kerry back ahead and then Lynch hits a kickout out of play as Kerry up the pace. But McKinless dispossesses O’Shea with a great tackle and stops the Kerry momentum.

26 mins: Finally a point, the first one in about eight minutes, a fisted point by Kerry before Rogers returns the favour with a nicely taken point. That’s more like it after a pedestrian 10 minutes or so.

23 mins: A few wides for Derry as they’ve got the upper hand the last five minutes but haven’t got the scores to show for it. Kerry then keep the ball very patiently and Shane Ryan the Kerry goalkeeper then has a pop and hits it wide.

20 mins: McFaul gets the ball along the byline and charges at the goal, tries to play in a goal with a fisted pass for McKaigue to score but it’s well defended out for a 45. Glass takes it and misses. But Glass makes up for it by catching the next kickout from Kerry but again Derry fail to make a score out of it.

17 mins: Slow patient attack by Kerry, Tony Brosnan heavily involved and he passes to Ó Beaglaoich on the overlap and he fists it over.

13 mins: Good start by the star forwards as Shane McGuigan wiggles around for an opening and then sticks it over with his right for a fine score. Then Kerry somehow don’t score after some luck and brilliant defending. Paul Murphy goes for the fisted point, hits the post, then falls to White who shoots but well blocked and ended up a free out.

10 mins: Lovely point by Derry after Rogers made a good run and laid off for McGuigan who sweetly hits over the bar.

8 mins: Immediate response from Kerry as Tony Brosnan splits the posts from about 25 metres out. Derry going for the aggressive goalkeeper approach again, will be interesting to see if Lynch is caught out again. Then a brilliant mark by David Clifford in between two defenders from a high ball and puts it over the bar.

6 mins: Counter attack from Kerry is well marshalled to a standstill by Derry and Ó Beaglaoich hits it wide after good defending. Derry then patiently come up the pitch and it’s a point for Derry’s inspirational figure, Conor Glass, well taken from distance.

Nearly a goal in the first minute by Derry’s McKinless, who runs through and hits across the goal, just past the post! But the first point of the game goes to David Clifford, who has lots of time and scores with his left in front of the posts.

Ahead of the game today, Denis Walsh previews and says the shadow boxing time is over for Kerry as they knuckle down to real business. “Nobody can say for sure if their ghost season of low-risk, defanged matches will leave them short for Croke Park assignment”.

A minute’s silence now for Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh, the Kerryman who passed away this week.

Full-time: Donegal 1-23 Louth 0-18. So that’s Donegal, Armagh and Galway in the semi-finals. Just one space left to fill and that game is coming up in 20 minutes.

A comprehensive victory for Donegal it looks like Donegal 1-21 Louth 0-16.

Eoghan Ban Gallagher scores a goal for Donegal and that could be the key score of the game. It’s Donegal 1-19 Louth 0-15.

So it’s Donegal 0-17 Louth 0-11 as the Ulster county maintain their lead after 50 minutes. Gallen scored a fine point to keep the advantage, he’s had a good game and Ciaran Thompson puts them one more ahead.

Two early points for Donegal, one for Louth at Croke Park, Michael Langan with a nice point. More combination play by Donegal and Doherty sticks it over to make it Donegal 0-14 Louth 0-9.

Ahead of the later game, Dean Rock writes that it’s time for Kerry to move up a gear in their quest to reclaim Sam. He writes:

“I’m expecting a big performance from Jack O’Connor side, because nothing on Kerry’s journey to this stage would have come as a surprise to them – they always planned to be in Croke Park this weekend and they’d have figured on getting here with minimal fuss.

“I have no doubt Kerry have been timing their run and we’ll see them start to pick up the pace now. It’s not as if this is a scenario they haven’t previously experienced. Indeed, not only do I expect a big performance from Kerry, but I reckon they will beat Derry pretty convincingly.”

Peader Mogan fists over the bar to make put Donegal two points up in stoppage time at the end of the first half. A few minutes later Gallen scores a nice point off his left. That’s Donegal 0-11 Louth 0-8 at half-time then. Good game there.

Mulroy has his target from the placed ball as Donegal and Louth swap scores and it’s Donegal 0-9 Louth 0-8.

In the other quarter-final taking place in Croke Park, Louth are keeping with Donegal. Sam Mulroy and Craig Lennon just scored points to make it Donegal 0-7 Louth 0-6, Louth with the last three points. It’s 27 minutes gone there.

After Dublin’s defeat to Galway last night, the Sam Maguire Cup is wide open and the winner of this clash will seriously fancy their chances.
