Celtic League: Team Check

Leinster

Leinster are unchanged from the team that beat Newport for tomorrow night's Celtic League semi-final against Glasgow at Lansdowne Road (7.30). Injuries to Nathan Spooner and Eric Miller have cleared up but there is a concern that three members of the squad are struggling with a bug. Brian O'Driscoll was laid low by the virus last week but this time it is Shane Horgan, Spooner and replacement hooker Gavin Hickie who have been unable to train.

Coach Matt Williams is optimistic that all will be available. Second row Leo Cullen suffered a bang on the shoulder in the Newport match and he has had physiotherapy for the problem. Williams has yet to finalise the replacements because of injury concerns.

Emmet Byrne, who missed the last match because of a torn rotator cuff, is being given every opportunity to prove his fitness: the likelihood is that Peter Coyle and not Byrne will be on the bench.

Williams singled out Paul Wallace for his performance the last day, especially because of the length of time that the Lions and Ireland prop has been out of the game through injury. Peter McKenna sustained a knee injury while playing for St Mary's on Sunday and while it was feared he might have had to undergo keyhole surgery, it now appears the cartilage is just bruised. Simon Keogh stands by.

The citing saga with Newport took another twist yesterday when it was confirmed that neither Trevor Brennan nor Spooner would have a case to answer despite Newport's initial muttering to the contrary. Leinster's case against Newport prop Adrian Garvey is still going ahead.

Glasgow

Glasgow will field an unchanged XV from the side which beat Connacht in the quarter-final for the semi-final against Leinster. The replacements bench has also been retained. The international triumvirate of number eight Jon Petrie, prop David Hilton and full back Glenn Metcalfe are still out through injury.

There was some doubt concerning the fitness of centre James McLaren but he has come through training.

Ulster

Ulster have retained the same XV that defeated Neath 38-29 for Saturday's semi-final against Munster at Lansdowne Road (3.0). James Topping is still out, so Sheldon Coulter keeps his place on the right wing. Coulter has recovered from an ankle injury sustained in the Neath game.

There are a couple of changes to the replacements with former Ireland captain Paddy Johns returning in place of Jeremy Davidson, who has picked up yet another injury - he has to be one of the most unfortunate players in Irish rugby. There was better news for coach Alan Solomons in the return of Byrn Cunningham, happily rehabilitated following a horrendous injury in the Stade Francais match.

The full back required over 30 stitches in a gash to his leg but is now fit to resume. There might be some mixed feelings in the Cunningham household though, as the player from whom Bryn takes over is his brother Jan.

Munster

Munster coach Declan Kidney has made five changes and two positional switches from the team that beat Llanelli 13-6 for Saturday's semi-final.

Dominic Crotty, who has recovered from a hand injury and who played for Garryowen at the weekend is restored to the full-back berth. He takes over from Jeremy Staunton, who drops to the replacements.

The injury to Rob Henderson, who twisted the knee upon which he had an operation during the summer in a training accident, could rule him out for a month. John Kelly moves from centre to the right wing, with Mike Mullins, a replacement the last day, restored to the midfield.

Scrumhalf Peter Stringer has recovered from an ankle injury and returns at the expense of Mike Prendergast, who scored Munster's try the last day. John Hayes took a knock on the shoulder and he is ruled out, so Marcus Horan is introduced at loosehead with Peter Clohessy switching to tighthead.

Paul O'Connell is preferred to Mick O'Driscoll in the second row. Martin Cahill comes into the replacements as does John O'Neill, who has recovered from a shoulder injury that has kept him sidelined for nearly two months.
