DES CAHILL is the new presenter of The Sunday Game, replacing Pat Spillane, who reverts to his former role as a pundit after four years in the anchor role. Ger Loughnane also returns to his punditry role after an unsuccessful two years as manager of the Galway hurlers.

" The Sunday Gameenters its 31st season this year," read a statement yesterday. "Beginning on May 17th, Michael Lyster will continue to present The Sunday Game Livewhile Des will take up the reins that evening."

Cahill joined RTÉ in 1984 as a news reporter and he moved into radio sport in 1987. Until 2006 he presented the sports bulletins on Radio 1's Morning Irelandprogramme each day plus the evening sports show, Sportscall. He has presented The Road to CrokerTV programme for the past two seasons. He is a member of the Cuala GAA club in south Dublin.

Paul Byrnes, executive editor of Gaelic games programming, said of the appointment: “Des has a natural flair for sports broadcasting and a proven affinity for Gaelic games in particular. Throughout his career Des’s passion, love and knowledge of GAA has always shone through and has resonated with fans the length and breadth of the country.”

Loughnane and Spillane will also be contributing to RTÉ’s GAA output on RTÉ Radio 1 and RTÉ.ie throughout the championship.
