Sir, – Cllr John Kennedy of Fine Gael seeks shelter for his party from the claims of cronyism that followed the manner of the appointment of Katherine Zappone to a taxpayer-funded position by citing a similar appointment made by the leader of Fianna Fáil in 2009 (Letters, August 2nd).
While it is rather strange that Fine Gael is now using Fianna Fáil standards to calibrate their moral compass, it would be foolhardy indeed if the party failed to hear the message being delivered. Mr Kennedy and his party colleagues would be well advised to stop making excuses and pay attention. – Yours, etc,
JIM O’SULLIVAN,
Rathedmond, Sligo.
A chara, – Michael Nugent and Jane Donnelly of Atheist Ireland (Letters, July 31st) seem to believe that it is Ireland that needs help from the UN in relation to freedom of expression. How about a UN special envoy to Ireland? Katherine Zappone might be available. – Is mise,
LOMAN Ó LOINGSIGH,
Dublin 24.
