Sir, – Friends of mine from Cavan have a long 300-yard driveway leading up to their farmhouse. Years ago they had an Alsatian dog who not only chased every car that called to the house but managed to puncture the tyres of any car with its engine running.

Anyone calling to the house knowing the dog situation had to free-wheel down the drive as the dog had no interest in the car and the tyres if the engine was not running.
The same dog was mild mannered and would even move away from the kitchen Calor gas heater when the cat came in to sit in her rightful place! – Yours, etc,
