Sir, – Conscription is sexist. This was recently demonstrated in Ukraine when conscription was limited to men aged 18 to 60. In an era when women are actively participating in all types of workforces at all levels of seniority, why are they excluded from conscription during wartime when their services are of equal value to men’s? The services of female army personnel, female medics, female engineers, female scientists, female strategists, etc, were dispensed with in favour of those of their male counterparts. Equality of opportunity is just as important in wartime.
On International Women’s Day, perhaps it’s time to highlight the gender inequality associated with wartime conscription. – Yours, etc,
