Sir, – I have been thinking recently of the dilemma that our Taoiseach is struggling with regarding a return invitation to President Trump when he visits in March. The solution is a simple one. Follow the age-old tradition of the Irish guest. When leaving the White House, Enda should shake hands with Mr Trump and say “Thank you very much for an enjoyable lunch. You must come to us next time.” This can be said in the sure and certain knowledge that Mr Trump is not going to say “Sure. Why not make a date now?” Enda will then have had “his meat and his manners”, as my late mother-in-law was wont to say. – Yours, etc,
