Sir, – When I read the report in the sports pages of a soccer tournament, startlingly called "Unite the Union", and involving the champions and runners-up of the football leagues in Northern Ireland and the Republic, I assumed it was the start of a campaign to reverse partition by restoring the United Kingdom to its pre-1920 configuration ("Aviva Stadium to host Unite the Union Champions Cup decider", Sport, October 15th).
I speculated on the apoplectic reaction in Áras an Uachtaráin when the President is invited to the Aviva Stadium to present the cup to the winners.
Disappointingly, halfway through the piece, it is revealed that the title of the competition derives from the sponsor being the trade union Unite.
From a branding point of view, it certainly is a provocative way to draw attention to a very minor soccer competition.
