Under the lime trees

Sir, – Following Derek Scally's revealing column about the longstanding relationship between Berliners and their beloved linden trees ("Berlin Letter: Fragrant linden tree is a witness to the past", June 30th), I would just like to mention that Government Buildings on Merrion Street in Dublin also has linden, or rather lime trees, planted all around the courtyard.

Planted during the refurbishment works in 1990/91, they are of the non-drip hybrid variety (Tilia Euchlora), ensuring that cars parked underneath do not suffer the mess of aphid effluent dripping on their roofs and bonnets, as can be the case in Berlin and elsewhere.

– Yours, etc,

KLAUS UNGER,
