The perils of urban cycling

Sir, – On my usual morning cycle through the streets of my native city of Limerick, I have been appalled by the lack of courtesy of some motorists when it comes to cyclists. On a dedicated cycle-path, which runs the length of Parnell Street, I have been impeded by cars and delivery vans parked on the cycle-path. I have had car and van doors opened in my face as I tried to stay in the cycle-lane. Motorists have cut across me as they took a left turn and, bizarrely, on one occasion I have been overtaken, on the cycle-path, by an off-road motorbike with engine revving and doing a wheelie!

I am a man of a certain age and can ill-afford to “take a hopper”.

Please, please motorists, can you be more careful, and share the road space safely with us cyclists? – Yours, etc,

PAT SHANAHAN,
