Sir, – Your correspondent Sr Patricia Lenihan (Letters, November 6th) writing in respect of the location of the new National Maternity Hospital (NMH) stated that the Religious Sisters of Charity will transfer their shares from St Vincent’s Healthcare Group (SVHG) [who will run the new hospital] to St Vincent’s Holdings, the new independent charity. St Vincent’s Holdings will be the ultimate owner the new NMH site. The Sisters of Charity will own all the shares of that charity, so the Sisters of Charity will own the site. Previously the sisters consulted with the Holy See in this regard.
Why should a religious order be rewarded and have the new NMH built on their land when the State will pay for its construction? – Yours, etc,
