Rethinking rugby

Sir, – David Bourke (Letters, February 5th) makes a number of good points. I wouldn't cap weight at 100kg as the game has always featured some big players, but normally in the front five. Years ago they had to play 80 minutes. As the game wore on, they were usually less of a presence. Now someone tipping the scales at 150kg can come on fresh as a daisy for the last 10 minutes. Scrap the substitution system and only allow it for medically certified injury. I would add a complete ban on the double tackle. And second, any player designated a "forward" who does not engage in ruck and maul situations must align 10 metres behind their own defensive or attacking backline. This would allow backs to play rugby without forwards getting in the way. – Yours, etc,

DAVID CASSIDY,
