Religious oaths and high office

Sir, – I hope the recent by election result in Dublin Bay South might serve as a wake-up call to our Government regarding the requirement for a religious oath for high office. Thankfully our Constitution doesn’t require a TD to take a religious oath on taking office but it does for the office of President. And the chances of us electing a non-religious President are growing all the time. Who knows, it might even be Ivana. – Yours, etc,

BRIAN WHITESIDE,

Glenageary,

Co Dublin.
