Sir, - Denis Gill (October 25th) is quite right to highlight the absurdity of the flow of immigrants arriving in labour on our shores. Perhaps this flow (and its consequences for our maternity hospital services) might be reduced somewhat, were we to restrict Irish citizenship to those born in Ireland of Irish citizen parents. Our Constitution (Article 9.1.2) empowers us to bestow or remove citizenship, "in accordance with law".
So, how about it, Bertie? Let's have some law, please (and maybe even make it a bit retrospective). - Yours, etc.,
