A chara, – Marion Walsh writes that the custom of thanking the bus driver is unique and remarked upon by visitors to our capital (Letters, December 22nd).
In the city where I live, in Spain, I note that this pleasant custom is more honoured than not. – Is mise,

A chara, – I agree with Marion Walsh that having side doors on buses makes it difficult to thank the driver while getting off. But her belief that saying thanks to the driver is unique to Dublin is not correct. People always thank bus drivers here in Edinburgh, and, touchingly, they like to claim it is a custom unique to here also. – Is mise,

Sir, – Having commuted on Dublin Bus since the age of four and now on the fantastic Route 109 Bus Éireann route for many years, rest assured we all thank bus drivers for their humour and unflappable service. Good manners will never go out of style! – Yours, etc,
