Sir, – Further to "Western seaboard has 'vast potential' to generate renewable energy" (News, April 14th), the 5 GW targeted power by 2030 will come mostly from fixed turbines in shallow water close to the east coast.
Much more emphasis needs to be placed on reducing the visual effect and on liaison with the most affected communities.
Three of the wind farms are planned off Greystones. The turbines, taller than the local landmark Bray Head, will occupy most of the sea horizon, with a 115 degree arc of view.
The operators have been asked to open an interpretive centre to show both the effect and need for this but have not agreed to do so. It is essential not to take the local community for granted and to provide benefits and involvement. – Yours, etc,
