Lotto – ‘play responsibly’

Sir, – As well as the long odds of winning the Lotto, there is also the question of “playing responsibly” as the National Lottery advises us to do on its website.

For example, if somebody has a flutter (as I’m sure many people do) on two EuroMillions tickets and two Lotto tickets per week, that works out at a not inconsiderable €988 per year. Now, in anybody’s book, that’s hardly responsible. And I haven’t even factored in workplace syndicates that people may belong to on top of their personal outlay. So, how much money exactly does the National Lottery want people to spend to maintain a level of responsible betting and, in the process, shore up the company’s profit margin? – Yours, etc,
