Sir, - The subject I refer to is the atrocious spelling, deplorable grammar and unfortunate ignorance that we, as a nation, display when it comes to distinguishing a plural from a possessive "s". Errors of this nature are most often to be found on shop window posters, mailshot material, restaurant menus, pub notices (Sandwidge's £1.50), event posters, and even in some of our chain-stores (Slack's £19.99) - the list is as endless as it is varied. These, I suppose, could almost be excused, but when such carelessness creeps into the press and onto the television, (unchecked it would seem), it's time to draw attention to it. I refer not only to those daily publications notorious for such sins, but also to the gurus in RTE - only last week did I notice two blatant spelling mistakes in the News for the Deaf.

Where and why do we go so wrong? It takes so little effort to get it right. - Yours, etc., Triona Marren
