Sir, – The Garda Síochána announcement that it is to allow the wearing of the turban for members of the Sikh community and the hijab for members of the Muslim community as part of the Garda uniform is welcome news.
Let’s not lose the existing Garda cap, though, it is quintessentially Irish. After all, it is by their headwear that we can identify the British bobby and the French gendarme.
And on that subject, I imagine there are not many US citizens serving at present, so please Commissioner Harris, bin those dreadful baseball caps. – Yours, etc,
