Garda Commissioner’s medals

Sir, – While warmly wishing Garda Commissioner Drew Harris every success in his new appointment and welcoming him to the challenge he embraces, I would seriously question one decision he obviously gave thought to.

It is the accepted norm to wear medals and decorations awarded by the state that one serves on one’s uniform. However, it is not usual to wear medals and decorations awarded by another state. For a commissioner of a police force of a republic, particularly the Republic of Ireland, the wearing of UK medals (including a well-deserved Order of the British Empire) is simply wrong and likely to cause offense, although I am sure that this is certainly not his intention. – Yours, etc,

Capt DONAL
