Madam, – Garrett Concannon asserts he was “overtaken by a senior citizen on a motorised cart” while observing the 30km/h limit (February 2nd). My family has investigated purchasing mobility scooters and the fastest we could find had a maximum speed of 15km/h. Are we to believe that our senior citizens have been modifying their scooters with turbo-chargers, or is it possible that your correspondent was exaggerating this incident in a desperate bid to undermine the case for the new speed limits? – Yours, etc,
Madam, – The need for the 30km/h limit points up the need for better separation between pedestrians and vehicular traffic in Dublin. During the refurbishment of the Ha’penny Bridge it was perhaps a pity that no consideration was given to raising the bridge above street level.
It is still possible to re-model the abutments to extend the bridge at each end to allow pedestrians to cross clear over the roads. It would then be possible to walk from Merchant’s Arch over Wellington Quay, the river, and Lower Ormond Quay into Liffey Street without crossing traffic. This would do more than anything else to knit the north and south city centre together. – Yours, etc,
