Sir, – Robbie Syme (Letters, August 11th) reckons Ireland is a small country when it comes to climate change. We produce more carbon than 400 million people in the developing world. We may have a small population compared to some, but we are a big polluter and it's time to tackle it.
And even if it was a small change in a global context, the direct benefits for ourselves are manifold – cleaner air, purer water, and healthier, happier citizens. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – The pandemic has highlighted the insular thinking of wealthier nations in vaccinating fully their own populations while poorer countries lag far behind, risking the emergence of more virulent and resistant strains of the virus. Sir, – Cllr John Kennedy of Fine Gael (Letters, August 11th) needs to realise that unlike the people of Blackrock and Dún Laoghaire, most Irish people can’t afford an additional tax. Companies need to be taxed more. Not people who turn on the light and heat in their own home. – Yours, etc,
