Caught in the headlights

Sir, – There are two different types of headlights passing me on the opposite lane these dark evenings. One emits a warm inoffensive beam that allows me to see the oncoming vehicle with clarity; the other emits a fierce bright beam that causes my eyes to be pierced with a dazzling glare that sends me looking into the hard shoulder to regain my vision. As a road user, I would welcome a discussion on how these lights are impacting on drivers’ ability. What criteria were these blazing lights put through to allow them on the roads in the first place?

Maybe the Road Safety Authority needs to send its representatives out to measure these beams and their effects.
