Downsizing and property market

Sir, – Many people in Ireland live in houses that are larger than they need. We have many four- or three-bedroom houses with only one or two occupants.

Surely it would make sense to try to achieve a more efficient use of the housing stock.

Have any of our political parties got a policy on incentivising downsizing?

Clearly, an increase in the rate of downsizing would be in the public interest.

Downsizing by rental as well as by sale could be incentivised, as this could be a more attractive option for some people who would be slow to sell their homes. – Yours, etc,
