Sir, – Last week I visited Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon, for the first time in many years.
Not only was I dismayed, and saddened, by the state of this once prosperous town but also by the fact that there is no memorial to the great John Dillon, nor mention of his father, John Blake Dillon, or his son, James Mathew Dillon, who too were men of stature in Ireland and intimately connected with the town.
Of course, my views are influenced by my family’s connection (through Elizabeth Dillon nee Mathew) but all the same, it does seem that now something should be done, in Ballaghaderreen, in time for the centenary of John Dillon’s death on August 4th, 1927, and past disagreements forgiven.
– Yours, etc,
