Sir, – Given the recent successful record of Irish graduates with arts degrees, Conor Kileen, as quoted in Carl O'Brien's article (January 20th), is right to emphasise their worth. He needed, however, to stress the quality requirement. A degree in the arts and humanities, as Conrad Russell, son of the philosopher, stressed in Dublin 25 years ago, is one of the best means of training the mind, but only if it is intellectually rigorous and coherent.
Anything less is a waste of students’ time, money and of some of the best years of their lives. – Yours, etc,
