AIB and pension levy

Sir, – I was very interested to hear the Government state that the €3.4 billion from the sale of 25 per cent or so of AIB would be used to reduce the national debt. May I suggest it use much of it to pay back the €2.5 billion the Fine Gael/Labour government took from private pensions between 2012 and 2015? The levy was brought in by Michael Noonan for job creation schemes but it was clearly discriminatory in that it only targeted private pensions. However, as many pensions funds couldn’t sustain the impact of the levy, the payment was then deducted from the individual pensioner. – Yours, etc,

EAMON MADDEN,
