Sir, – I read “Slowing down in Portugal” (Letters, September 21st) with great interest. As a traffic-control measure, it sounds ingenious.
In Cork city and suburbs, the civic responsibility to slow down is seemingly enforced by slow, grinding progress towards a set of red lights, with most, if not all, of the following lights also red on approach. This certainly keeps traffic significantly below the 50 km/h limit.
Although some days I’m unsure as to whether this daily occurrence signals traffic management, mismanagement or karma. – Yours, etc,
