Sir, – The Oireachtas Finance Committee called in senior OPW officials this week regarding the outrageous monies spent on projects within Government Buildings and Leinster House.

It was wrong to do that as civil servants are only acting on directions from their Ministers.

Why wasn’t Minister of State for the OPW Patrick O’Donovan called in? – Yours, etc,

PAUL DORAN,

Clondalkin,

Dublin 22.

A chara, – Given the incredible expenditure on the security hut, it seems only right that the roof should look like a raised eyebrow. – Is mise,

EOGHAN Mac CORMAIC,

Cill Chríost,

Gaillimh.

Sir, – I have a spare calculator which I’d be happy to sell to the OPW at a very reasonable price. – Yours, etc,

FIONNUALA WALSH,

Galway.

Sir, – Some years ago two bespoke architectural pavilions were constructed inside the railings on Kildare Street outside the Dáil.

One is used for security. The other was briefly run as a souvenir shop but has been full of junk for quite some time.

It could easily have been repurposed as a most excellent bicycle shed.

Is there no lateral thinking going on in the OPW? – Yours, etc,

RORY E MacFLYNN,

Blackrock,

Co Dublin.

Sir, – Does the wave motif on the security hut symbolise a Wild West Way on Ireland’s eastern seaboard? – Yours, etc,

CIANA CAMPBELL,

Ennis,

Co Clare.

Sir, – Given the prevalence of bicycle theft in our capital city, I’d advise our cycling politicians to park their bikes in the security hut. – Yours, etc,

HUGH McDONNELL,

Glasnevin,

Dublin 9.

Sir, – Finn McRedmond asks politicians to “stop being management consultants and become storytellers” (Opinion & Analysis, September 26th).

Why not start with “Once upon a time there was a Government that had loads of money and it decided to build a bicycle shed and security hut and we all lived happily ever after”? – Yours, etc,

MIKE MORAN,

Clontarf,

Dublin 2.
