Sir, – In “The Irish Times view on the French election: far-right kept out, but no clear way forward” (July 9th) you write that that French president Emmanuel Macron’s snap election call has “backfired on him”. True. As did Rishi Sunak’s, across the water. Meanwhile, across the pond, we’re most likely in for an extraordinarily “snappy” election come November. Mr Macron’s call, you say, was a “gamble”.
Whether calling an election in the autumn, or “running its course” to March 2025, our own Government must know that a “day at the races” awaits. – Yours, etc,
