Sir, – Mark O’Connell berates Dublin City Council for erecting the fencing along the Grand Canal (“The Kafkaesque charade on Dublin’s Grand Canal is not ‘common sense’. It is common stupidity”, Opinion & Analysis, June 1st). For the record, as an example of the lack of local government in this country, the canals are controlled by Waterways Ireland, based in Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh, and not the city council. Of course the fencing should be removed. – Yours, etc,
