Sir, – Pavel Marianski (Letters, July 11th) wonders if the snarling, scowling and fist-clenching of modern tennis players might be “human evolution”.

Sir, – I totally agree with Pavel Marianski (Letters, July 11th) in bemoaning the behaviour of so many tennis players when they win a point, especially the clenched fist.

I also dislike the practice of appealing to spectators for applause.

However, probably worst of all, is when, on winning a match, some spreadeagle themselves on the ground, remaining prostrate for minutes with no regard for the loser who has to stand waiting to shake their hands.

Wimbledon was always a highlight of the year and it is sad to see it marred by a lack of mannerly conduct. – Yours, etc,
