Parking on foothpaths

A sense of entitlement

Sir, – Last weekend I watched two elderly gentlemen in wheelchairs being pushed by their carers up the middle of a busy road into my village because inconsiderate drivers had parked their cars on the footpath thus making it impassable to any normal-sized human, never mind a child’s buggy or wheelchair. Yesterday I watched as parents with young children risked life and limb to reach town by walking in the middle of the same road because of inconsiderate car owners. I asked one driver (who was at the time unloading a child’s buggy from the boot) why she had parked on the footpath and she said she didn’t realise it was illegal. Another driver countered that he had recently completed a swim for charity, which indicated that he believed the swim was atonement for any and all future transgressions. – Yours, etc,
