Flexibility in meeting challenges

A culture shift

Sir, – In light of systemic failures in certain sectors of the public service, notwithstanding the unquestionable commitment of the vast majority of public servants, might we consider the possibility of culture shift being a key source of the problem? A culture that seeks to identify problems rather than solve them is more comfortable in creating systems of reporting than productivity informed by a culture of caution in an environment where “blame-ocracy” has replaced democracy. Perhaps we might seek to embrace the esprit de corps shown in meeting the challenges of the Covid crisis, where flexibility in meeting challenges and ends justifying means resulted in us doing some very impressive work. – Yours, etc,
