Sir, – Rosita Boland’s colour piece about her recent visit to the newly refurbished and reopened Clontarf Baths brought back some mainly happy memories for me as a member of Clontarf Ladies Swimming Club and my summers spent at the baths in the 1950s (“21-degree seawater, blue sky above: A glorious swim in Clontarf Baths, now open to all”, August 12th).
One of the many differences between then and now was that a filtration system did not exist (or if it did it didn’t work very well!) so it was not uncommon to see the odd cabbage head floating on the top, and as I was to learn to my cost, jellyfish had free entry too!
I hope the newly reopened baths will thrive and I look forward to an opportunity to have a dip there before too long. – Yours, etc,
