Boston bombing suspect moved to detention centre

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (19) left Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre overnight on Thursday into Friday morning and was moved to a medical centre at the Fort Devens federal prison in Massachusetts.

He had been treated for injuries to his head, neck, leg and hand apparently sustained in a firefight with police in the Watertown area outside Boston during which his brother Tamerlan (26) died and hours before Dzhokhar's capture in a boat stored in the back garden of a nearby house.

The young brother had been detained in the same hospital that treated the victims of the blasts for which the teenager has been charged with crimes including the use of a weapon of mass destruction.

The highest-profile inmate of the prison centre is Raj Rajaratnam, who was sentenced in 2011 to 11 years for insider trading. He suffers from diabetes.

Tsarnaev was transferred as the Boston Globe published an interview with a 26-year-old Chinese entrepreneur whose Mercedes SUV was allegedly car-jacked by Tamerlan. The man was held for 90 minutes by the brothers into early hours of Friday, April 19th.

The victim, a resident of Cambridge who would only agree to be identified as “Danny”, said he had pulled in to the roadside to respond to a text message on his phone when a man dressed in dark clothes climbed into the front passenger seat, brandishing a handgun.

Danny was held in the car first with Dzhokhar following behind the Mercedes in a second car and then with the two brothers in the Mercedes. The brothers spoke about driving to New York in his company.

Dzhokhar reportedly told investigators after his capture that the brothers planned to travel to New York to detonate their remaining explosives in Times Square. After conversations ranging from credit limits for students to the wonders of the Mercedes vehicle, Danny escaped from the car while Dzhokhar went into a Shell station to pay for petrol.
