Separate appeals for information as two die on roads

Two people have been killed in separate road crashes yesterday (Monday).

In Co Tipperary, a woman in her mid-20s was killed and two other women in their 50s injured following a collision between a car and a truck on the M8 between junction 9 and 10 shortly after midday.

The injured women were taken to University Hospital Limerick and South Tipperary General Hospital at Clonmel. The lorry driver was uninjured.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to the crash.

The woman was a rear seat passenger in a car which was headed northbound when it and a truck which was travelling in the same direction collided.

The crash happened at Dogstown, between Junction 9 and Junction 10 - between Cahir and Cashel on the main Cork-Dublin Road at around 12.25pm.

The younger woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while two other women, the driver and a front seat passenger, both in their 50s, were also injured and removed from the scene by ambulance.

One woman was taken to University Hospital Limerick, while the other woman was taken to South Tipperary General Hospital in Clonmel. All three women are from the Mid-Tipperary area.

The driver of the truck, who is from Northern Ireland, was badly shaken by the collision, which led to the temporary closure of one lane of the northbound carriageway.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or was driving the N8 near Dogstown at the time of the crash to contact them at Thurles Garda Station on 0504 25100.

In Co Louth, a man in his 60s was killed in an early morning crash at Rassan, on the Dundalk to Castleblaney road (N53) at 7am.

The deceased was the driver and the only occupant of the car.

The road was closed to allow for a forensic investigation of the scene.

Anyone who was on the road between 6.30am and 7.15am is asked to contact Dundalk Garda station on (042) 9388400.

The deaths bring the toll from road crashes for the year to date to 124 and comes after a 92-year-old woman died following a collision involving a car on the Navan Road in Dublin over the weekend.

Maureen Creaner was knocked down while walking on the road at about 8.15am on Sunday morning and died later in hospital.

It is understood she lived close to where the incident occurred and after she had been at Mass in the Church of Our Lady Help of Christians.
