Wolves' bid to stave off relegation from the Barclaycard Premiership has been boosted by the signing of Newcastle striker Carl Cort.
The Molineux side have been short of firepower having returned to the top flight this season, scoring just 20 goals in 22 league matches and manager Dave Jones has moved to try to rectify the situation.
Cort completed his transfer today after undergoing a rigorous medical. The 26-year-old has been plagued with injuries since his £7million move from Wimbledon to St James' Park in 2000 and, as a result, never had chance to establish himself in the first team.
The clubs, however, appear to disagree on the fee with Wolves claiming they have paid £2million for the player while Newcastle saying they have sold Cort for £1.6million. Cort will be unveiled before Wolves' FA Cup fourth round tie at home to West Ham later today.
The 26-year-old Cort, a long-time transfer target of Wolves boss Dave Jones, had switched from Wimbledon to Tyneside in a £7million move during July 2000. But the Southwark-born front man was destined for an injury-ravaged spell at Newcastle where he was restricted to just 25 appearances, scoring eight goals.
However, Magpies boss Bobby Robson is confident Cort will be able to resurrect his career in the Black Country. Robson said: "He will prove to be a Premiership player and he might kick us in the teeth one day - and I hope he does."
