COUNTING IN the referendum on the alternative vote continued at the eight count centres across Northern Ireland last night, writes DAN KEENAN

There were no plans for a local announcement of the vote on the question of changing the method for electing Westminster MPs.

Instead, results were finalised and transferred to the referendum count centre in Belfast where the result was due to be declared.

Collation of the figures in the North continued as it emerged that well over 50 per cent of the votes in Britain were in favour of keeping the current first-past-the-post voting system.

The result is expected to show a winning margin for the No lobby of more than 2:1.
