Ankara - Turkey's parliament yesterday voted to allow the former prime minister Mr Necmettin Erbakan to return to the assembly from which he was banned in 1998 for trying to subvert the officially secular constitution.

Under the new law, Mr Erbakan, will be eligible to stand as an independent candidate in future elections, although the five-year ban on him joining or leading a political party remains in force.
