AMERICAN fans of rock band Oasis have been demanding refunds on concert tickets after finding out that singer Liam Gallagher will not be appearing.

While brother Noel and the rest of the band were preparing for their show at an 18,500 capacity indoor stadium in Chicago last night, Liam was denying the group was on the verge of splitting.

A spokesman for Oasis said that "progress is being made" and he expected Liam to rejoin the band by the end of the week.

Liam (23) walked out of Heathrow Airport and the band's three-week tour of the US minutes before he was due to board the plane. He demanded that his luggage be unloaded from a Boeing 747 before catching a taxi to the house he shares with fiancee Patsy Kensit in St John's Wood, north-west London.

He left the house briefly yesterday to buy a pint of milk at his local newsagent. He ran down the steps giving his traditional two-fingered salute to reporters gathered outside.

Flanked by two minders, he said. "You know the story, it's all in the papers. I've got to move house."

He said he had spoken to Noel and dismissed rumours of a split.

"I've nothing to say. That's all that's going on. There's no story. See you later."

The group's record company, Creation Records, said Liam will rejoin the band at the end of the week. A spokesman said he had a sore throat
