A 45-year-old man was killed when the car he was driving hit a tanker in Co Galway and a man in his 20s died in a two-car crash in Donegal.

Gardaí in Tuam are investigating the crash between the car and the tanker at about 8am on the N17 between Ballindine and Milltown.

The remains of the 45-year-old man who died have been removed to University College Hospital Galway.

The road is closed at the scene of the collision awaiting a forensic collision investigation, a Garda statement said.

Separately, two cars were involved in the Donegal crash at about 12.30am at The Haw on the N15 Lifford to Castlefin road.

The male driver of one of the cars was later pronounced dead at Letterkenny General Hospital. He was aged in his early 20s. Two others were taken to hospital suffering injuries, gardaí said.

The road also remains closed for forensic examination.

A total of 156 people had died on the State's roads up to 9am this morning, according to official Garda figures.
